You and I were meant to be together But you never Know when the world’s gonna end Have you seen the news about the weather? Seems wherever You look there’s a lot to contend With When the sea levels rise As the glaciers come crashing down Our love will never drown You and I were meant to be forever But if not If not on this world? True the winters have been getting warmer How in autumn We swam in the sea A whale washed up upon the shore and The postmortem Found plastic debris When the fish start to float As the oceans choke Our love will never croak You and I were meant to be forever But if not If not on this world? Somewhere someone is building a rocket To take us off it When the world catches alight It’ll go to the Red Planet Or they’ll land it On one of its satellites When the temperatures rise As we look up to the sky Our love will never fry You and I were meant to be forever (x3) But if not If not on this world? Then Maybe on Phobos

about

Known for their idiosyncratic takes on provincial life in Cornwall, Hedluv + Passman set a new and exciting trajectory with their latest song Maybe on Phobos. With its 80’s sound palette and smooth vocals, it wouldn't be out of place on a ‘Best of the New Romantics’ compilation album.

It launches with a hypnotic soundscape, drawing the listener in like a tractor beam. The rockets are disengaged and the vocals begin their orbit with Casio synths and cosmic guitar swells expertly transporting them into deep space.

The lyrics navigate a nightmarish asteroid belt of climate collapse and rising sea levels. Thanks to some steady hands on the controls, along with some precision rhyming, disaster is averted and we land on Phobos.

One of the two moons of Mars, and projected to become a stepping-stone in its future colonisation, Phobos is named after the Greek God of Fear and resembles a giant space potato. We are reminded of all that we have left behind.

Climate change is a difficult subject to tackle in a song but with Maybe on Phobos, Hedluv + Passman manage to create something not only timely; but emotional, funny and ultimately uplifting.
